In 1978, Mr. Hong, the Dean of General Affairs of National Tsinghua University at Hsinchu, came to visit San Diego. All the alumni, about a dozen at that time, gathered to greet him and then established San Diego TsingHua Alumni Association (SDTHAA). Since then, the number of alumni in San Diego has grown significantly. Starting early 1990s, a big number of new alumni from the Beijing campus came to this area and joined the association.

SDTHAA is a non-profit, non-political organization for the Tsinghua alumni in the San Diego county area. People who currently are or in the past were faculty, staff or students of Tsinghua University, at either Hsinchu or Beijing campus, can join the association and become a member.

The missions of SDTHAA are to provide an environment for alumni in San Diego to build and develop friendship, to connect the Tsinghua Alumni with other organizations and communities, and to maintain close relationship with the Hsinchu and Beijing campuses.
