Empowerment through Entrepreneurship

On December 2nd, 2007, members of the San Diego Tsinghua Alumni Association (SDTHAA) gathered at the UCSD Price Center for an interactive seminar on entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship has been a hot topic for Chinese living in America in recent years as awareness about starting a business has increased. The SDTHAA committee realized the need for a platform for discussion of entrepreneurship and organized this seminar entitled, "Empowerment through Entrepreneurship" by Keynote speaker Wayne Huang, who has been through multiple start-ups, shared his personal experiences in starting his own companies in integrated circuit design and wireless software. He also discussed recent trends in attracting venture capital.

The day began with a welcome note from SDTHAA President Ying Li. Dr. Huang's enthusiastic and lively manner then set the tone for an afternoon of informative presentation and highly interactive discussions. Dr. Huang outlined the trends for integrated circuit design and wireless software start-ups in the past ten years and pointed out the opportunities and challenges current entrepreneurs are facing. He related his personal story as an entrepreneur and also discussed stories of other start-ups in the San Diego area. The rest of the afternoon was devoted to questions from seminar attendees, who raised topics such as how to build reputation in front of venture capitalists and how to mentally and financially prepare for being your own boss. The enthusiastic discussion continued on for an hour beyond the scheduled seminar time. As people went home for the afternoon, they took with them a sense of empowerment and encouragement for entrepreneurship.
